ORANJE BOER INTRODUCTION
ORANJE BOER is a FARM MANAGEMENT software package to assist the farmer in all administrative tasks. The main features of the program are :
(a)Costing on Orchards, Pack Houses, Vehicles, Markets, Workshops, Products, Plants, Projects, etc. The farmer can decide on which activities or units to cost. The purpose of costing is to determine whether a unit or process is profitable. Oranje Boer will assist the farmer in decisions, and will help to identify non-productive areas. Costing has become important - every farmer competes against other and the lower the costs the higher the income. The room to make profit is tight.

ORANJE BOER DOES NOT REPLACE YOUR FINANCIAL PACKAGE (ACCOUNTING PROGRAM).
ORANJE BOER is different from a general accounting system, and does not replace it. An Accounting System like Pastel is necessary to determine Income/Loss over a financial year, mainly required by the auditor and taxman. ORANJE BOER on the other hand, keep transactions of a harvest year together in such a manner to support the farmer in decisions and to enable the farmer to increase productivity in the competitive farming industry.
TYPICAL TRANSACTIONS THAT CANNOT BE HANDLES BY YOUR NORMAL ACCOUNTING SYSTEM.
Spray and Fertilizing Records: ORANJE BOER has built in procedures to mix different spray items and to apply/re-apply quickly to selected orchards, while updating at the same time spray-, fertilizing costs to orchards, mechanical- and labour costs involved.
Mechanical Applications: ORANJE BOER keeps a separate logbook of each vehicle/tractor/truck, and their applications to orchards can be done bringing into account machine hours while updating diesel rebates, orchard costing, machine costing and machine deliverable, farm diesel tanks when filling up, etc.
Labour : ORANJE BOER has a PIECEWORK module that are optionally integrated with ORANJE LONE.
The PIECEWORK module has special functions to quickly determine different piecework tariffs (optionally on a sliding scale) per workgroup/orchard while updating ORANJE LONE payslips for the workers, the labour costs on the orchard, updates the harvesting records such as kg fruit per orchard/cultivar harvest if you are busy harvesting, or updates the cost of product packaging, packing labour, and updates all stock levels at the same time eliminating double work.
Overhead Costs : ORANJE BOER can easily take an overhead cost and divides it prorata hectare size to selected orchards. Totals of overhead costs can be taken from Pastel or your financial package and then allocate it prorata to orchards in ORANJE BOER.

ORCHARDS have costs like labour, fertilizing, spray, etc.
Machines like tractors are applied on orchards at a tariff.
For the ORCHARD the machine applied is a mechanical cost.
The ORCHARD produces fruit (cultivars) which can be seen as an income for the orchard.
The fruit is produced at a price per kg which is weighed up against the expenses (costs).
The price per kg is determined by ORANJE BOER to balance out all the expenses.
In the sketch above the cost of the fruit produce = D = C + B + A.
HOW DOES COSTING WORKS ON MACHINES
For a MACHINE (for example a tractor) is the application of it on the orchard an income. This is measured at an hourly tariff (credit entry) times the number of hours it is applied. The MACHINE itself has its own expenses, like fuel, service, etc. (debit entries). If the net value shows a credit, then the tractor is profitable to use.
In the sketch above, a machine is profitable if B > L + M.
HOW DOES COSTING WORK ON CULTIVARS AND PRODUCTS
Fruit harvested per cultivar are weighed up against fruit processed (packed)(PRODUCT) to determine the cost price of final products. The Cultivar, Cultivar cut-aways, Labour, Packaging and labels are expenses taken into account when determining Product Cost.

Products delivered to markets versus products produced on the farm are compared. Products delivered have expenses like transport, cooling, etc.(debits). Product credits are monies received which is necessary to determine product profits or losses.
